Tom and I met at the Life Time Fitness back in the fall of 2002. He was on the personal training staff and I was working out with a personal trainer by the name of Mark Larson.
I was a 31 yo single mom with two young boys. And oh my word, I just did the math, Tom was only 25 years old.
We have Mark to thank for our almost 19 years of marriage, as he was incessant about setting the two of us up.
On our first date, we went to a bodybuilding show. A few months later we got engaged and a few months after that we were married.
Some of our favorite and longstanding “fitness” friendships were made in our Life Time Fitness days.
Going to the gym has been a consistent in our marriage. Whether we were going to the gym to work (early on in our marriage, I worked as a personal trainer too) or to workout, you could find us there most days of the week.
In 2020, when the gyms were closed, reopened, and closed, Tom said to me, “we will never be without a gym again.”
And here we are, standing in our new home gym.
After Tom’s bike accident this summer, going to the gym took on a whole new meaning.
Without a doubt, his consistency in strength training over the last two decades prepared his body for the fall. And hitting the weights at the gym, just five days later, is part of the reason for his remarkable recovery.
When we moved to the country, building a home gym was on our “infinity list“. After Tom broke his neck, it moved to the top spot.
However, since we couldn’t sell memberships to fund our gym, we raised our own money. We decided to go back to one vehicle and sold my Jeep. It was a very worthy investment.
If you’re ever in our neck of the woods and want to workout, stop on by.
“For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.” ~ 1 Timothy 4:8
A lot of thought and research went into the equipment we chose for our home gym. Tom wrote a post about how to build the best home gym on his blog. I encourage you to check it out if you’re interested in building your own home gym.
